We
use a 05/01 date for the spring and summer season. Based on the player age
prior to that date determines their division. We do consider age exceptions.
At
4/5YOs, we do not record outs. Batters move from bases to base (only one base
on a hit). Batters will hit from a pitched ball from a coach that will be about
10’ away throwing from one knee. If the batter does not put the ball in play by
the 5th pitch, the batter will hit from a tee. The batter can bypass
the pitcher immediately and just hit from the tee. We encourage our coaches to
start with a tee at the start of the season and progress from there. No score
is kept. For a complete set of rules, click here.
At
6YOs, this is similar to 4/5YOs with a coach pitching from a short distance and
a tee available. The notable difference is that runners getting out at a base
return to the dugout. We will use a youth umpire across some of our games to
assist with that. When youth umpires are not present, coaches will make the
out/safe decision. As well, a batter hitting the ball into the outfield could
take two bases. No score is kept. For a complete set of rules, click here.
At
7YOs, we start keeping score and control of the ball must occur for runners to
stop. Batters get 5 pitches and can swing at each pitch. After that, unless the
ball is fouled or tipped, the batter is out. An inning ends when a defense records
3 outs or the offense scores 7 runs. This is the age we start using catcher’s
gear. The coach pitcher will pitch from a circle, with the front of the circle
at 36’. At this age, we start teaching to get the ball to the pitcher and there
are rules for how to do that. For a complete set of rules, click here.
At
8YOs, the difference from 7YOs is that we allow 3 swings across the 5 pitches. At
this age, the emphasis remains getting the ball to the pitcher to stop play. For
a complete set of rules, click here.
At
9/10YOs, this is kid pitch. The mound is located 46’ from home plate. This is
regular baseball in that there are 4 balls to walk, 3 strikes to a strikeout.
We introduce base stealing at this age where once the ball passes home plate,
any runners may advance. We also start the infield fly rule. For a complete set
of rules, click here.
At
11/12YOs, the mound is at 50’ and the bases are extended from 60’ base to base
to 70’. We allow leadoffs at this age, balks for pitchers and a dropped third
strike is in play. For a complete set of rules, click here.
At
13YOs and older, the mound is at 60’6” and bases are 90’ a part. While there
are some house rules, this is major league baseball. For a complete set of
rules, click here.
